Create Data Points
How to enter environmental data in Darwin
Create Data Points
Data points are the environmental measurements and activities that Darwin uses to calculate your biodiversity footprint. They represent everything from raw material purchases to energy consumption and land use.
What data points to collect ?
The level of detail you need for your project determines which data points to collect. See our guide for recommendations:

Each data point contains:
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Label | Descriptive name | "Cow milk supply from Farm 1" |
| Value | Numeric measurement | 6,000,000 |
| Unit | Measurement unit | kg, m², kWh, t-CO2-Eq |
| Related Entity | Which entity this belongs to | "Farm 1" |
| Scope | Direct (1) or Upstream (3) | "3 - Upstream" |
| Type | Data category | Product/Materials, Pressures |
| Subtype | Specific classification | Procurement, Climate Change |
| Model Used | ecoinvent/EXIOBASE match | "cow milk (GLO)" |
Add a Data Point
Data Types
Product/Materials
Physical goods and materials entering your supply chain:
| Subtype | Description | Example Units |
|---|---|---|
| Procurement | Purchased materials | kg, t, m³ |
| Sales/Production | Goods produced | kg, units |
Pressures
Direct environmental impacts you've measured:
| Pressure Type | Description | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Climate Change | GHG emissions | kg CO₂ Eq, t CO₂ Eq |
| Ecosystem Use | Land occupation/conversion | m², ha |
| Water Use | Water consumption/withdrawal | m³ |
| Pollution | Chemical releases | kg, CTUe |
| Overfishing | Fish extraction | t |
Financial
Monetary data for economic allocation:
| Type | Description | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Sales revenue | € (millions) |
| Procurement spend | Purchase costs | € |
Understanding the Table Sections
The data points table is organized into three sections:
Collection (Left)
Raw data you enter - labels, values, units, entities.
Modelling (Center)
How Darwin interprets your data - type classification and process matching.
Accounting (Right)
How the data contributes to calculations - contribution rules and conflict resolution.
Launch Assessment
After entering your data points:
-
Click Launch Assessment in the top-right corner
-
Darwin will process your data through the impact models
-
Results appear in the Footprint views
If you see data points with warnings, check the Rules Management page to resolve conflicts.
Download Template
For bulk data entry:
-
Click Download template at the top of the page
-
Fill in the spreadsheet following the format
-
Use Import to upload your data
Units Reference
Common units supported by Darwin:
| Category | Units |
|---|---|
| Mass | kg, t, g, lb |
| Area | m², ha, km² |
| Volume | m³, L |
| Energy | kWh, MJ, GJ |
| GHG | kg CO₂ Eq, t CO₂ Eq |
| Currency | €, $ (millions) |
Next Steps
After entering your data:
-
Check and resolve rules for any conflicts
-
View your impacts in the assessment views
-
Create scenarios to model alternatives
