Quickstart

Complete your first biodiversity assessment in Darwin

Quickstart

This guide walks you through creating your first biodiversity assessment in Darwin.

Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure you have:

  • Received your invitation email from Zitadel
  • Some business data ready (procurement spend, product volumes, or site information)

Step 1: Log In

  1. Navigate to app.darwindata.ai
  2. Enter your Zitadel credentials
  3. You'll land on the Project Selection page

First time? You can use passwordless login (FaceID, Windows Hello) for faster access.

Step 2: Create a Project

Click "New Project" to create your first assessment project.

Each project is an independent workspace where you can:

  • Define entities (organization units, sites, products, suppliers)
  • Collect data points
  • Run assessments
  • View and export results

Step 3: Map Your Entities

In the Collect section, start by mapping your organization structure.

Organization Nodes

Create your top-level business units:

  1. Click "Add Entity" in the Galaxy view
  2. Select "Business Unit" as type
  3. Enter a name (e.g., "Europe Division")
  4. Optionally set ownership % and geography

Sites (Optional)

Add physical locations:

  1. Add a new entity of type "Site"
  2. Specify site type: Factory, Office, Warehouse, or Retail
  3. Enter the address for map visualization
  4. Link to parent organization node

Suppliers (Optional)

Map your supply chain:

  1. Add entities of type "Supplier"
  2. Set supplier rank (Tier 1-5)
  3. Link to relevant organization nodes, sites, or products

Start simple! You can always add more entities later. Begin with your top organization node and a few key suppliers.

Step 4: Collect Data

Navigate to Data Points to input your data.

Tips for Data Entry

  • Start with what you have: Financial data is fine for a first assessment
  • Copy-paste from Excel: Label and Value columns support direct paste
  • Fill all fields: Incomplete rows will cause errors

Click "Save" to store your data points.

Step 5: Launch Assessment

Once your data is ready:

  1. Click "Launch Assessment"
  2. Wait for the computation to complete (usually seconds to minutes)
  3. Navigate to Visualize to see results

Step 6: Explore Results

Analyse View

  • Double-click any entity to see its biodiversity footprint
  • Explore tabs: Summary, Commodities, Pressures, Impacts

Compare View

  • See aggregated impacts across your organization
  • View data quality score
  • Identify top contributors by pressure, supplier, product

Locate View

  • See your sites on the map
  • Toggle environmental data layers (protected areas, deforestation risk)
