ENCORE Biome
This layer classifies every location into one of the 15 ENCORE 2024 biomes, derived from the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology v2.0.
Source: IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology v2.0 / ENCORE 2024 Year: 2024 Category: No parent in the platform taxonomy (listed under Accounting in this catalogue) Coverage: Global Format: Raster grid (COG), categorical Used in risk analysis: Yes. It feeds the biome dimension of the Nature Stress Test dependency matrix in Resilience. It is not a Sites & territories materiality flag.
What it shows
This layer tells you which ENCORE 2024 biome a location belongs to. There are 15 classes, from forests and deserts to urban areas, cropland, wetlands and the deep sea. It matters because ENCORE rates how strongly a natural asset supplies an ecosystem service differently in each biome. The Nature risks page explains that biome dimension of the delivery matrix.
How it is built
The classes come from the indicative maps of the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology v2.0. Its 109 ecosystem functional groups are mapped to the 15 ENCORE biomes. Where several groups overlap at one place, the most specific class wins. Subterranean is a fallback class: it applies only where no other class does.
How to read it
Each pixel holds a biome ID from 1 to 15. The IDs are categories, not a scale: 14 is not "more" than 2. Read the colour against the legend below. A value of 0 is no data.
