Water Purification Data Coverage
This layer shows, cell by cell, which inputs of the Water Purification Loss layers are measured and which are filled.
Source: Chaplin-Kramer et al. 2019 (InVEST NDR), PFAS Data Hub Year: 2015-2026 Category: Scenario Format: Raster grid (COG), categorical Used in risk analysis: Context only. It is a coverage map and carries no shock or level.
What it shows
This layer tells you which of the two measured inputs of the Water Purification Loss layers exist at a cell: routed river nitrogen and measured PFAS. Where an input is missing, the loss layers fill it or leave it out. Use this layer to judge how much a water-purification figure rests on measured data.
How it is built
Each cell takes one of four values:
| Value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | Neither input is measured |
| 1 | Routed nitrogen only |
| 2 | Measured PFAS only |
| 3 | Both |
Routed nitrogen comes from the InVEST NDR outputs of Chaplin-Kramer et al. (2019). Measured PFAS comes from the PFAS Data Hub.
How to read it
Two gaps change what a water-purification figure means:
- No routed nitrogen. This happens north of about 60° N, in dry or small coastal basins, and in the gaps of the Chaplin-Kramer data. There the loss is the contamination part alone, which stays under 0.3 points at the current weight K of the contamination term. Such a cell reads about twenty times lower than a comparable cell with nitrogen. The difference is a coverage effect.
- No measured PFAS. PFAS is measured on 1.2 % of land cells, all in Europe. Everywhere else PFAS reads the European mean, 0.050. See the Water Purification Contamination Index.
