SOC Reference
This layer maps the topsoil organic carbon the land would hold with no land use, the reference of the Soils asset in Resilience.
Source: Sanderman, Hengl & Fiske (2017) Year: 2010 (the layer is a counterfactual; see below) Category: Scenario Format: Raster grid (COG) Used in risk analysis: Context only. It is the reference that SOC State is measured against; Resilience does not read this layer as a level.
What it shows
This layer shows how much organic carbon the topsoil (0-30 cm) would hold if the land had no land use, in Mg C/ha. It is the reference of the Soils asset: the SOC State layer expresses today's topsoil carbon as a percentage of this stock.
How it is built
The stock comes from the no-land-use scenario of Sanderman, Hengl & Fiske (2017), WHRC Soil-Carbon-Debt, over 0-30 cm.
The layer is a state, and it is deliberately not tagged as a shock layer. Tagging it would make it compete with the SOC shock layers for the Soils asset.
How to read it
A darker cell would hold more carbon with no land use. Read the layer as a counterfactual rather than a date in the past. Europe shows why: it reads +0.9 % against 1800 but −3.3 % against this reference, because it was already cultivated in 1800.
