SOC State

This layer maps 2010 topsoil organic carbon as a percentage of the stock with no land use, the present-day level of the Soils asset in Resilience.

Source: Sanderman, Hengl & Fiske (2017) Year: 2010 Category: Scenario Format: Raster grid (COG) Used in risk analysis: Yes. It is the present-day level of the Soils asset in Resilience, read as an integrity. It is not a Sites & territories materiality flag.

What it shows

This layer shows how much organic carbon the topsoil (0-30 cm) held in 2010, as a percentage of the stock the same land would hold with no land use. That reference stock is the SOC Reference layer.

Resilience reads it as the level of the Soils asset, for example in Loss of soil quality regulation.

How it is built

The 2010 topsoil stock is divided by the no-land-use stock, both from Sanderman, Hengl & Fiske (2017), WHRC Soil-Carbon-Debt, over 0-30 cm. The result is not capped.

The layer is a state, and it is deliberately not tagged as a shock layer. Tagging it would make it compete with the SOC shock layers for the Soils asset.

How to read it

100 % is the no-land-use stock, which intact land reads. Below 100 %, land use took carbon from the soil: 46 % of cells are in that case. Values above 100 % are possible, since the layer is not capped.
