Protected Areas

This layer merges the protected areas of every national and supranational register Darwin holds into one map layer, with the legal status of each area.

Source: National registers, EEA CDDA, PAD-US, Japanese Ministry of the Environment and MLIT, OpenStreetMap Year: 2016-2026 Category: Transition risks · Sensitive areas · Protected areas Coverage: The countries listed below. Countries with no register yet are drawn in grey as "Not covered yet". Format: Boundary polygons Used in risk analysis: Map layer only: the Sensitive areas flag still reads the national layers.

What it shows

This layer shows, on one map, the protected areas from every national and supranational register Darwin holds. Each area carries its legal status, its country, its source, its year and its origin: an official register or OpenStreetMap.

There are two legal statuses. Legally protected areas have a protection decree. Legally registered areas are listed in a register without a protection decree.

Countries with no register yet are drawn in grey as "Not covered yet". No polygon there means no data, not no protected area.

How it is built

The layer merges the registers below into one set of polygons. The country footprints of the "Not covered yet" class come from Natural Earth.

Covered countries (source, year):

The "See also" pages document the national layers. Their content and year may differ from the merged layer.

Names in non-Latin scripts. Names from Kazakhstan, Japan and three in Thailand also carry a Latin-script spelling. It is a romanization, not a translation: BGN/PCGN, RTGS or Hepburn, and each name records which method made it. Japanese names are the exception. National parks carry their official English name, and most other Japanese names are a machine romanization (cutlet), marked unverified.

How to read it

Green polygons are legally protected areas. Light green polygons are legally registered areas. Grey country footprints are not covered yet: read them as missing data. Clicking an area shows its name, its Latin-script name when it has one, its legal status and designation, its designation year, and its country with source and year.

Areas from OpenStreetMap (Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, India, Thailand) do not come from an official register. Treat their boundaries and completeness with care.

This layer does not raise a flag. The Sensitive areas flag of Sites & territories still reads the national protected-area layers.
