Soil Organic Carbon (% of Mass) — baseline 2015

This layer maps absolute soil organic carbon as a percentage of soil mass over 0-30 cm from SoilGrids 2.0, the state the Soils shock is anchored on.

Source: SoilGrids 2.0 (ISRIC) Year: 2015 Category: Scenario · Soil organic carbon (SoilGrids) Coverage: The footprint of the SOC shock layers Format: Raster grid (COG), on the grid of the SOC shock Used in risk analysis: Yes, as the state of the Soils asset in the Nature Stress Test hybrid. It is not tagged as the Soils level: that is SOC State. It is not a Sites & territories materiality flag.

What it shows

This layer shows how much organic carbon the soil holds, as a percentage of soil mass, depth-weighted over 0-30 cm. It is the state the Soils shock is anchored on.

How it is built

The value is the SoilGrids 2.0 soil organic carbon content, depth-weighted over 0-30 cm.

The Nature Stress Test hybrid rescales it along the CMIP6 cSoil trajectory, then applies a piecewise integrity threshold:

SOC%(t) = SOC%_SoilGrids × cSoil(t) / cSoil(2015)

The threshold is 2 % in temperate zones and 1 % in tropical zones (Loveland & Webb 2003).

The layer is written on the grid of the SOC shock and masked to its footprint. A cell therefore carries a level exactly where it carries a delta.

How to read it

A higher value means more organic carbon in the soil. The legend has colour stops at 1 % and 2 %, the same values as the tropical and temperate thresholds of the hybrid.

This layer is distinct from the Soil condition (Global Soil Organic Carbon) layer from FAO GSOCmap. That layer is a carbon stock in t/ha and cannot carry the percentage threshold.
