What it shows
This layer delineates France's Type 1 Natural Zones of Ecological, Faunal and Floral Interest (ZNIEFF). These are areas of limited extent that are notable for the presence of rare or remarkable species, species assemblages or habitats characteristic of the national or regional natural heritage. A site within or near one of these zones sits in an area of recognised ecological sensitivity, which can carry heightened regulatory and reputational attention.
How it is built
ZNIEFF is the French national inventory of areas of ecological interest, maintained by the national natural-heritage authorities. Type 1 zones are the smaller, more sharply defined units, identified on the basis of confirmed presence of rare, remarkable or characteristic species and habitats. This layer presents those inventoried zones as fixed boundary polygons; it is a designation map rather than a graded risk score.
How to read it
This is a presence layer. A site that intersects or lies near a Type 1 polygon is flagged as falling within an inventoried area of high ecological interest. There is no 1–5 score; the signal is whether a location coincides with a designated zone.
Class thresholds
This is not a continuous physical-flux layer and has no numeric thresholds. It is a presence / boundary mask: the underlying feature is France's inventory of ZNIEFF Type 1 zones (smaller, sharply defined areas of high ecological interest), stored as vector polygons (NOM and related attributes) with no modelled score. There are therefore only two states for any location: inside (or near) a ZNIEFF Type 1 zone, or outside it.
The single "class" is presence. A site is flagged on the Sensitive areas dimension when it intersects a ZNIEFF Type 1 polygon (the proximity trigger is an intersection, so the buffer distance is effectively zero — direct overlap is required), combined with a material ENCORE pressure/service as set out in the Risk analysis table above.
How these thresholds were set. There is no Darwin classification here: membership is taken verbatim from the French national natural-heritage inventory (INPN / PatriNat — MNHN). A polygon is included if and only if it has been inventoried as a Type 1 ZNIEFF on the basis of confirmed rare, remarkable or characteristic species and habitats. No breaks, bins or cut-offs are applied by Darwin.

Comparison with the WWF Risk Filter Suite
This is a French national inventory layer with no direct global equivalent in the WWF Risk Filter Suite. It extends area-based coverage related to BRF S14_1 Protected/Conserved Areas and S14_4 Other Important Delineated Areas regionally, beyond the global datasets WWF relies on.
